PRESIDENT AND CEO
Jack M. Berkman is the President and CEO of BERKMAN, a nationally recognized, award-winning public relations/strategic communications, digital and branding firm. Berkman has more than 40 years of experience in the PR/communications industry.
In 2010, he was inducted as a member into the Public Relations Society of America’s College of Fellows, in recognition of his distinguished career in the practice of PR, while long exhibiting personal and professional qualities as a role model for practitioners and advancing the state of the profession. This which is the single highest honor bestowed upon members of the PR profession nationally.
After graduating from California State University, Northridge in 1969, Berkman joined the public relations staff of General Motors Corporation in Detroit and later served as an Account Supervisor for Herbert H. Rozoff Associates Public Relations Counsel in Chicago.
In 1973, he joined American Housing Guild San Diego, as National Director of Public Relations, before being promoted to Director of Sales and Marketing. Berkman then served as Vice President/Director of Marketing for Rancho La Costa Properties, a position he held until founding his own marketing/PR firm, Berkman Associates, in June 1976. In 1979, the firm became Berkman & Daniels, and grew to become one of San Diego’s most prominent PR/marketing firms.
In October 1994, he established Berkman Marketing Group, now BERKMAN Strategic Communications. Since 1997, BERKMAN has earned more than 65 Bernays Awards for excellence in public relations and strategic communications from the San Diego Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Additionally, in 2006, BERKMAN won the prestigious national Public Relations Society of America’s Silver Anvil Award for its representation of JABRA Media Relations Campaign.
Berkman is a 1986 alumnus of LEAD San Diego. He has served as the first non-journalist President of the San Diego Press Club, and was named “PR Professional of the Year” in 1987 by the Public Relations Club of San Diego. He has also served as the Director of the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Symphony, Ruben H. Fleet Space Theater and Science Center, and San Diego Repertory Theater.
Berkman is former Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of the Gaslamp Quarter Association, which honored him as “Trailblazer of the Year” in 1999. In addition he has served on such boards as The San Diego Blood Bank, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, The Downtown San Diego Partnership, Promises2Kids, as well as having been recognized by the San Diego Business Journal since 1998 in its “Who’s Who in Public Relations.”
He is an active member of The Rotary Club #33 of San Diego (since 1991) and has been an officer and member of Congregation Beth Israel’s Executive Committee. Berkman is also a Red Coat Member of the Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl Host Committee. He is past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Film Commission and serves on The Balboa Park Trust Commission.
In 2006, he was named one of the Daily Transcript’s Top 120 Influentials and the Gaslamp Quarter Association recognized his achievements with a prestigious Lamplighter Award. In 2007, Berkman was honored with the prestigious Eva Irving Community Service Award by the San Diego Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America for his exceptional community service and contributions for over 30 years to the City of San Diego. In 2010, The San Diego Business Journal acknowledged him as one San Diego’s Most Admired CEO’s.
